What is Ichthyosis?

Ichthyosis is the name for a group of skin conditions, which cause the skin to be dry and scaly.

Whereas many other skin conditions have periods of flares and remission, with ichthyosis the scaling is always present and generally affects the whole body.

Causes of Ichthyosis

Ichthyosis is caused by mutations in the genes controlling skin cells.

These gene mutations are usually inherited from a parent, and the symptoms generally appear from birth, or within the first year.

Depending on the particular type of ichthyosis, the fault in the gene either results in skin cells reproducing much faster than usual, or in another types, the cells reproduce at a normal rate, but cannot shed as normal. Both of these mutations result in a build-up of rough, thickened scales.

Symptoms of Ichthyosis Vulgaris

There are many different types of ichthyosis, with Ichthyosis Vulgaris being the most common inherited ichthyosis.

Within the first 1 or 2 years of life, the skin will become dry and rough, with fine scaling. The scaling will usually appear on the torso, arms and legs. The palms of the hands and soles of the feet will often have more skin creases than usual. The bends of the elbows and knees, as well as the face are typically unaffected.

Ichthyosis also often occurs alongside atopic dermatitis (eczema), asthma, and food allergies.

Treatment of Ichthyosis Vulgaris

There is currently no known cure for ichthyosis, however treatment with emollients helps with the dry and scaling skin symptoms.

Applying an emollient such as Emollin to the skin, particularly after bathing or showering, will help to lock in moisture and provide a protective barrier.

Your doctor may also suggest gentle exfoliation of the skin.
